What It's About

A listener wrestles with the "why" behind selling her art.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1260
I often talk about finding and focusing on the need that your side hustle or business idea meets. This is easy to understand when it comes to selling something like tires—you have a car, you need to put tires on it.

Or even something like health coaching for Type 1 Diabetics, or architectural models, or lots of other things.

But what about art? Is there a need that artists should consider when making something for sale, or is it enough to just think about art itself?

Today we have a very interesting question from a listener in Connecticut that allows us to explore this topic in some detail.
"Hi, this is Kayleigh from Ansonia, Connecticut, and I've been listening to the show for a couple of years now and in time I caught up. I go back and listen to ones I've missed. My Side hustle is called Needle Felted Fuzzy's. I make and sell needle felt that items and I teach needle felted classes. My question is what is the need that I am fulfilling with my art? I love making art, but I can find it a difficult sell. I understand a business needs to fulfill a need. So when I decided to turn my hobby into a business, I started by focusing on one specific item. Foxtatoes which are palm-sized foxes shaped like potatoes.

I sell them as gifts of encouragement that are meant to be given to someone going through something. The classes are like Paint and Sips so they give people something to do and a new skill to learn. But the rest of my art is a tougher sell. I've also started making wall art to give beauty to people's homes. But what is the message I should be using to sell my art? What is the need? My art business is fulfilling. Thanks And I look forward to hearing your thoughts."
