What It's About
A caller wonders how to make the most of their employment transition.
Notes from Chris
Episode 1607
I’ve had a number of questions about employment transitions and what to do when you’re looking for work. In my book Born for This, I wrote about the concept of perfect vs. imperfect information. A game like Tic-Tac-Toe has perfect information, meaning that nothing is hidden. Chess is like that too—both players have access to all the information in the game. Poker is not like that—poker has imperfect or hidden information. Careers are much more like poker than tic-tac-toe or chess. There’s a lot you don’t know, and sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know."Hey Chris, this is Michael and I’ve been listening to the show for a couple of years now. My company recently did a round of layoffs, and I was in the group that was let go. Don't feel bad for me—it wasn't a huge shock, and to be honest I was ready for a change anyway. Since I was laid off instead of quitting, I received a severance package and have at least a month or two before I need to get serious about finding a job. I'd like to use some of this time to focus on creating a new source of income. I'm not expecting to replicate a full salary right away, but I'm thinking if I can get going, I'll be in a better place to grow the business while I begin a new job. How can I best use this "bonus" free time I've been given?"Listen to today's episode to learn more...
