What It's About
A recipe site founder reflects on a missing ingredient.
Notes from Chris
Episode 1924
I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure. Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong. The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned. Today’s short story features Annie Singer. She’s the founder of Reciple.com, which offers ad-free recipes from small creators. If you try to use online recipes, you know it’s frustrating because those sites are typically cluttered with ads. Annie also describes it as an equitable model—the first in this industry, in fact. The pitch to consumers is: “Reciple pays creators from your membership fee so that you can enjoy distraction-free cooking.” It’s a very cool project, but as you’ll hear, Annie was reluctant to tell people about it. A previous project had flopped, which left her feeling intimidated and even shamed. I relate to that, and I think it’s best for her to tell you the whole story.
