“Never underestimate the power of social proof.”

In this week's First $1,000 segment, we hear from Avery in Madison, Wisconsin, who transforms vintage luggage into decorative storage and furniture.

It started with suitcases found in her grandmother's attic — sturdy and charming but no longer functional. Avery noticed a gap in the market: most upcyclers were turning old luggage into tables or dog beds without much of a distinctive touch. She added vintage maps, repurposed leather, and even functional details like electric sockets.

Pricing by tier: small pieces from $150, medium at $250, and large or intricate designs up to $400. She incorporated shipping into her product prices and advertised it as "free shipping" to simplify the customer experience.

The turning point: a well-known interior design blogger bought one of her pieces and featured it on Instagram. Inquiries jumped 200%, and she hit her first $1,000 within three months.

"Never underestimate the power of social proof. That blogger's post provided more value than any of my paid ads. And do not cut corners — vintage pieces come with their quirks. Invest time in understanding each one."
