“Don't let your ego get ahead of yourself — the customer will always show you where the cracks are.”
In this week's Throwback Thursday segment, we hear from Kent Yoshimura, co-founder and CEO of Neuro, a functional gum and mint company. He and his co-founder Ryan were both athletes who got into supplementation — and realized that taking pills in public isn't the coolest thing. So they put the benefits of supplements into a shareable form: gum.
When we first featured them, they'd sold 5 million pieces and were getting stocked in CVS. Since then, a lot has happened: a nationwide entry into Whole Foods, appearances on Shark Tank and Joe Rogan, and a spot among the top five grocery products on Amazon.
Kent's advice for anyone in the consumer packaged goods world: constant experimentation. Their energy-and-focus product is on its 32nd iteration — they launched with something that didn't taste great because they didn't have much money, then kept improving by listening to customers. Don't let your ego get ahead of you; the customer shows you where the cracks are.
He also stresses balance and mental health: productivity and motivation come from being a complete, balanced person, not just from work.
