Today's caller draws on decades of design experience and wants a passive digital-product side hustle — but feels overwhelmed by the options.

Hi, Chris, this is Sheri from Vancouver. I'm a freelance graphic designer, which is already sort of a side hustle, but I've wanted to develop a more passive side of my business for a while. I have more than 20 years in the industry, and I've produced many kinds of projects — campaigns, branding, publications, packaging, signage, even merch. I enjoy the variety and probably couldn't pick a favorite type. For a passive side hustle, I'm thinking digital products would be a good fit, and I'm confident I can create great products for download. But how do I pick a niche? Everywhere I look there's a lot of competition — it seems like every idea is already out there and the top players are doing a great job. So how do I find a digital product niche that hasn't been done to death? I guess I'm my own worst client. Help.

Here's the twist: Sheri's problem is the opposite of what she thinks. She doesn't lack ideas — she has too much range. Broad capability is powerful for client work but dangerous for products, because it leads to vague offers, and vague digital products disappear in crowded marketplaces. The good news: you don't need an untouched niche. Most successful digital products are just narrower, clearer, or more usable than what exists.

Instead of brainstorming abstract ideas, mine your own work history for repeated requests, bottlenecks, and assets clients undervalued. Trade-show signage specs? Restaurant menu templates? Brand consistency kits for franchises? That repetition is market research — and "designed by someone who did this professionally for 20 years" is itself a selling point.

One more thing: don't over-optimize for passivity at the start. Digital products are front-loaded. Launch one focused, easy-to-explain product, then let buyers show you the next one.
