Today's caller has an idea to build a dynamic directory of garage and yard sales. Remember: we're not looking for "good" ideas, we're looking for profitable ones.
Everyone has stuff to sell, and I've learned a lot from the show about where to find sources for my eBay and Poshmark reselling hustle. I'm thinking there could be a lot of value in creating a dynamic directory of garage and yard sales in any particular area. The data could come from sites like Craigslist, and we could use Google Maps to populate all the different sales happening in the upcoming days. What factors should I consider in designing and making the app — and could I charge for it directly, or make it free and hope to monetize through ads?
There's probably a real niche here, but the raw information is increasingly commoditized — Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, local groups, and estate-sale aggregators already contain much of it. Simply plotting sales on a map likely isn't enough. The opportunity is in filtering and usefulness: serious resellers don't want all sales, they want the likely high-value ones, with signals like keywords ("tools," "vintage," "estate"), start times, and route optimization.
The strongest version probably isn't "Google Maps for yard sales" — it's decision support for part-time resellers. That's a narrower market, but a clearer one. And rather than a full app, test demand cheaply first: a curated weekend map and email digest for one metro area, to see if people actually come back each week.
On monetization, ads alone are weak for episodic, hyper-local traffic. A low-cost subscription for serious resellers — early access to curated "best bets," routes, keyword alerts — could outperform it.
