“Before taking a big decision, try out small things on the side and see what can work out.”
In this week's Throwback Thursday segment, we hear from Pardeep Goyal in India, who quit his job for a startup that failed, then regrouped with a blog called CashOverflow that succeeded. He earns commissions by helping readers choose the best credit cards, insurance, and other financial products — a market that's well established in the U.S. but far less mature in India.
When we first featured him, CashOverflow was just a blog, and that's all he intended it to be. But he discovered a deep problem: as more Indians come online, they need help choosing financial products for the first time. So he's turning the blog into something bigger — essentially a search engine for financial products in India.
The huge audience is both his biggest opportunity and his biggest challenge, since banks and institutions aren't yet used to working with bloggers and influencers, and much of the process still happens offline with paperwork.
His advice reflects how he got here: he started CashOverflow to learn content marketing on the side, and it became a real business. Before making a big decision — like the one that cost him money on his failed startup — try out small things on the side first and see what works.
